The Sundance film festival has announced that it will revive its London edition after a break in 2015, and shift its main venue to the centre of the city.
Having staged the majority of its screenings at the Cineworld multiplex in the O2 Centre in Greenwich – criticised by many for its antiseptic atmosphere and isolated location – Sundance London 2016 will set up shop at the yet-to-be-completed Picturehouse Central, currently being developed on the site of the Cineworld Shaftesbury Avenue, close to Piccadilly Circus in London’s West End.
Sundance London was first staged in April 2012, by the film festival’s current director John Cooper, bringing highlights of the parent festival to the UK capital, such as Fruitvale Station and Obvious Child, with a special focus on music-themed cinema. Sundance has since set up events in Los Angeles and Hong Kong.
No dates have yet been confirmed for the 2016 Sundance London event.
