'Sunak's budget lets down those who helped keep country going through crisis'

Working families needed far more from the Budget than they got.

Up and down the country, jobs and livelihoods hang in the balance as we face the worst recession in generations.

There was simply not enough in this Budget to boost our recovery and stop mass unemployment.

And by rewarding our heroic public sector key workers with a pay freeze, and not putting up more cash for our chronically under-funded public services, the Chancellor has let down those who helped keep our country going through the crisis.

Warm words and applause are not enough.

Let me be clear, “levelling up” shouldn’t mean tax-dodging freeports.

“Levelling up” should mean world-class public services.

It should mean decent work on fair wages for all.

And it should mean dignity at work, no matter who you are or where you are from.
