Sun shines on first day of Newcastle Mela - and the fun continues today

Scorching sun shone over Newcastle Mela's opening day.

The festival in Exhibition Park celebrates South Asian culture and continues on Monday.

Visitors were treated to a packed line up of music, entertainment, culture and food at the Mela's opening day on Sunday.

Performers included Punjabi singer Juggy D, who has worked with the likes of Madonna and Mary J Blige during his career.

H Dhami, Asif Khan, Sher Yar Khan and Nishaa George were also among the acts on a bill which merged contemporary Asian acts and traditional music.

A range of stalls sold clothes and freshly made food, while visitors could tackle an assault course organised by the British Army's Five Fusiliers, or try out a free cycle track, with bikes and gear provided for free.

Henna tattoos, circus stalls and face-painting were on the programme too.

Taj Mohammed, Chairperson at Newcastle Asian Arts and Music, which organises the Newcastle Mela, said: "This year has an amazing line-up of acts and free activities for all the family.

"Newcastle Mela increases with popularity year on year – we like to push the boundaries with the programme that we offer our visitors - and because of that, we have achieved a very credible place in the region’s arts and events calendar, as well as in the hearts of our audiences."

The mela continues from midday on Bank Holiday Monday and will close at 8pm.
