Sun seekers blasted after wrecking Ayr beauty spot

Scores of sun seekers flouted police advice at the weekend and wreaked havoc at a beauty spot on the outskirts of Ayr.

Dismayed residents at Greenan, just south of the town, discovered bottles, cans, plastic bags, fast-food packaging and other litter items left discarded near the beach.

Over the weekend, the area resembled a scene from a tip.

Even sections of sand dunes were left scorched by makeshift barbecues as revellers left a trail of destruction.

Police have been made aware of the damage and the actions of the weekend sun worshippers were branded “despicable” and “selfish.”

One man who passed the scene on Sunday morning said: “The place has been left a tip. There’s bottles, cans and fast-food wrappers everywhere.

“Fires have obviously been lit and sand dunes have been scorched.

“The damage to the area is unbelievable, it’s just despicable and so selfish.

“Why can’t people just pick up their garbage after them and take it home?

“This is just so irresponsible.”

With warm temperatures and sunny skies forecast for the entire weekend, it prompted police to issue an appeal asking people to visit local beauty spots “safely” and “respectfully” and to “follow the current COVID-19 guidelines.”

But these pictures clearly show that some paid no heed to that plea.

A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “As the lockdown continues to ease, it’s great that people are enjoying our beaches and our staff continue to work hard to keep them clean and tidy.

“However, we are reminding everyone to act responsibly, use bins where available or take their litter with them when they leave.

“It’s always disappointing when people don’t do that and leave their mess behind for others to clean up.”
