Yokozuna Hakuho suffered a blow in the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament as he lost to a maegashira, while sekiwake Tochinoshin continued his quest for promotion to ozeki with a clean slate on Day 6 of action at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo on Friday.
No. 2 maegashira Abi (2-4) pushed out Hakuho (5-1) in his initial charge. "I had a good bout yesterday and I was going to charge hard today," the maegashira, who had lost to yokozuna Kakuryu the previous day, said in a post-bout TV interview. The win over Hakuho is his first career win against a yokozuna.
Sekiwake Tochinoshin (6-0) was pushed hard by No. 3 maegashira Yutakayama near the bales, but manged to pull the winless maegashira down.
Yokozuna Kakuryu (5-1) had an easy win against Daieisho (0-6) by slapping down the No. 3 maegashira in the middle of the ring.
No. 4 maegashira Chiyotairyu (4-2) pushed down Goeido, the tourney's lone ozeki, onto the ring as the ozeki (3-3) tried to dodge the maegashira's charge.
In the bout of the two komusubi, Mitakeumi threw Endo down to the ring after the two popular wrestlers exchanged slaps.
