Sumo / Undefeated Hakuho remains sole leader

Yokozuna Hakuho maintained the sole lead at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, keeping his record perfect on the 10th day of the basho in Tokyo on Tuesday.

In the final bout of the day at Ryogoku Kokugikan, the Mongolian yokozuna comfortably defeated No. 4 maegashira Okinoumi (6-4). After the jump-off, Hakuho grabbed his opponent's belt and forced him out with ease.

No. 15 maegashira Chiyonokuni, who had been within one win of Hakuho coming into the day, was dealt a defeat by No. 11 maegashira Ikioi, who improved to 6-4.

Sekiwake Tamawashi picked up his eighth win by pushing out No. 2 maegashira Nishikigi (4-6). The sekiwake is tied with Chiyonokuni, two wins behind Hakuho.

Ozeki Takayasu managed to make his record even at 5-5 after slapping down sekiwake Takakeisho (7-3). Ozeki Goeido collected his fourth win after defeating No. 4 maegashira Kotoshogiku (4-6).
