Newly promoted ozeki Takakeisho suffered his first defeat, while yokozuna Kakuryu kept his record perfect on the third day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo on Tuesday.
After the jump-off, Takakeisho resisted an aggressive attack by No. 1 maegashira Hokutofuji, but the maegashira worked the ozeki toward the edge and eventually pushed him out of the ring to collect his first victory.
Kakuryu, the lone yokozuna in the tournament after fellow yokozuna Hakuho withdrew because of an injury, exchanged slaps and thrusts with top maegashira Kotoshogiku. The two then tried to throw each other simultaneously, going off the ring at virtually the same time. But Kotoshogiku's arm touched the ground first, resulting in the second defeat for the former ozeki.
Two other ozeki also struggled. Goeido went down to defeat at the hands of No. 2 maegashira Endo, who forced out the ozeki for his first victory. Ozeki Takayasu, who suffered an opening-day loss, was unable to add to his win total when komusubi Mitakeumi slapped him down to improve to 2-1.
In other action, No. 3 maegashira Tamawashi picked up his first victory by pushing out sekiwake Ichinojo (1-2). Sekiwake Tochinoshin, who was demoted from ozeki, remained undefeated by forcing out winless No. 4 maegashira Okinoumi.
