Summit to watch: the gripping first trailer for Everest is snow joke

The very best survival films, from Lifeboat to Gravity, inspire you to be better equipped should disaster strike yet also cause slight bouts of agoraphobia, labelling the outside world as full of things that will make you dead.

The first trailer for action adventure Everest does all of this and makes you feel cold and useless too. A cast of familiar faces, from A-listers (Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley) to dependables (Robin Wright, Emily Watson, Josh Brolin) to those guys from those things (Jason Clarke, John Hawkes) to Sam Worthington, find themselves either up a mountain or having tearful calls down below in this fast-based drama.

It’s the true life tale of two different expeditions to reach the top of the world’s highest mountain which are both beset by a brutal snowstorm and the ensuing battle for survival.

It’s directed by Baltasar Kormákur, whose Hollywood attempts have been average at best (2 Guns, Contraband) and scripted by William Nicholson and Simon Beaufoy. Nicholson has worked on the scripts for Gladiator and, most recently, Unbroken, while Beaufoy won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire.

Everest will open in 3D and 2D on 25 September in the UK.
