Summerlee classic car show another success as hundreds go along to event

More than 100 different vehicles motored into Summerlee on Sunday to help raise money for charities.

Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life’s classic car show was a success despite the grey clouds, with hundreds of visitors supporting the event.

The thirteenth annual show helped to raise funds for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and Home Comforts.

The event was set up by Joe Kelly, member of the Wolseley Register and Gartcosh Classic and Sportscar Club.

Money was raised through donations, activities and a tombola held in the museum.

The cars at the event ranged from 1950s taxis to late 2000s Bentleys.

Douglas Young, fellow member of the Wolesely Register and Gartcosh Classic and Sportscar club, said: “We’re really pleased with the turnout and we’re happy the weather lasted.

“It was good for everyone to get back home dry rather than wet.”

Joe Kelly added: “It went very well, some years we have about £5000 and the best year we had about £10,000.”

Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity volunteer and owner of a classic Morris Minor car Andy McArthur said: “It’s a great event to hold because there’s an indoor arena and an outdoor one so should it rain there’s somewhere for people to be and if the cars get wet then so what.

“It’s a chance to tell the message and it gives it visibility.”

Cars weren’t the only things on show, Summerlee’s famous tram gave passengers rides throughout the day and a live band and 1950s dancers entertained visitors.

Children were given a chance at driving on a small go-karting track which was set up at the side of the museum.
