Britain could be hotter than the Canary Islands by the end of the week – with a possible high of 27C.
That’s the Met Office prediction for London on Saturday, if the right mix of warm air arrives from France and Spain.
A high of 23C is expected in Manchester that day, though rain and clouds could make it quite muggy. And the resort of Barry Island in South Wales will hit 21C.
It won’t be a heatwave, when at least three days in a row must be above average, but the Balearic conditions will be a break from rain early this week.
The sunny interlude towards the weekend falls as many children break-up for the summer holidays, following the huge Covid-19 disruption to schooling.
The Met Office’s Tom Morgan said: “After quite a warm weekend it will cool off through the middle part of the week before temperatures start to rise again from Thursday.
“Temperatures could rise to 24C on Thursday or 25C on Friday and then there is uncertainty about the absolute highest temperature at the weekend.
“If all the ingredients come together we could see a maximum temperature of 27C.
"For this to happen we would need sunshine, blue skies and warm air from Europe and the south east, pushing in from places like France and Spain rather than from over the sea to the west.”
Conditions are expected to settle after the weekend, with spells of wet and windy weather possible across northern and western areas, says the Met Office.
BBC weatherman Darren Bett predicted a gloomy lull before Saturday.
He said: “Temperatures won’t be as high on Tuesday, with a fair bit of cloud and some showers.
"We will see around 17C in Newcastle and 20C in London.”
