Summer Loving: Grease prequel movie in development

Rex Features

A prequel to the 1978 classic musical Grease has entered development.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Big Fish scribe John August has been brought on board to direct the film, which will show how Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) first got together.

Titled Summer Loving, the film will take inspiration from the Grease song “Summer Nights,” in which Danny and Sandy separately tell their friends about their summer fling.

Paramount – the same studio who released the original Grease – are releasing the film, and will no doubt be hoping for a better response to the prequel than to the doomed sequel which starred Michelle Pfeiffer.

August previously directed the Ryan Reynolds-starring thriller The Nines in 2007. The filmmaker is better known for his scripts, with two films based on his screenplays out later this year – the live-action adaptation of Aladdin and the Guillermo Del Toro-produced Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

Grease recently returned to TV screens in 2016, when a “live for TV” version was aired in 2016 and went on to win five Emmys.
