Summer holidays back on in Wales with date for tourism reopening

Summer holidays are back on in Wales with the tourism sector able to start opening from July 6 - as long as the virus stays under control.

First minister Mark Drakeford says under his roadmap the stay local message will be lifted on that date and the "tourism economy will reopen" - with bookings allowed from July 13.

This will allow people to stay in holiday cottages, caravan parks and hotels that have adjusted to allow guests to be "self contained".

There were no dates this morning on hospitality and attractions but more details may be provided at the 12.30pm Welsh Government briefing today.

He warned this was on the proviso that virus levels did not spike and comes as an outbreak hits Anglesey - with 58 cases linked to the 2 Sisters abattoir in Llangefni. He said though that the test, track and trace system would allow for localised action rather than blanket lockdowns.

Mr Drakeford told Radio 5 Live : "On Monday, 6th of July, provided the virus is still under control we will lift our stay local instruction here in Wales and at that point the tourism economy will reopen in Wales.

"We will have to sure the virus is still under control at that point, provided it is, the stay local restrictions will be abolished and people inside Wales and from outside Wales will be able to travel.

"I am saying today to the tourism sector they should use the next three weeks to prepare so that beyond that self contained accommodation will be able to reopen in Wales so people will be able to travel to holiday cottages or static caravans or hotels that are organised on a self contained basis.

"People will be able to take bookings in Wales from the 13th of July onwards."

He said this could only be done where measures had been introduced to maintain social distancing but provided this was done "we look forward to welcoming people from outside Wales back to Wales".
