Summer holidays at risk as 16 'green' destinations now on amber 'watchlist'

A host of travel hotspots are teetering on the edge of the amber watchlist as the summer holidays come to an end.

Later today Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is expected to give his latest tri-weekly traffic light update.

The list determines how easy it is to travel into the UK from different countries, with an 11 day quarantine hotel stay required for red list nations and green list returnees having to complete a day two coronavirus test.

Trips back from amber countries require a self-isolation period or two tests if you're double jabbed.

Currently 16 countries have been on the green watch-list since the last travel update, meaning their coronavirus figures render them a cause for concern in the government's eyes.

It is likely that several of these are downgraded to amber this afternoon, potentially complicating late summer getaways.

Those countries are:

  • Anguilla
  • Antarctica/British Antarctic Territory
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Barbados Green watchlist
  • Bermuda Green watchlist
  • British Indian Ocean Territory
  • Cayman Islands
  • Croatia
  • Dominica
  • Grenada
  • Israel and Jerusalem
  • Madeira
  • Montserrat
  • Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands
  • Taiwan
  • Turks and Caicos Islands
It is rumoured that Turkey will be moved from the red to the amber list (Moment RF)

In more positive news for holiday enthusiasts, two big countries could be removed from the government's travel traffic light system if pressure to have them reclassified pays off.

Representatives speaking for Turkey and Pakistan have urged that they be moved from the red to the amber travel lists at a review expected later today.

Doing so would be a huge boon for people with family and friends in the countries, and those looking for a late summer getaway.

The hopes that Turkey could go amber comes as the country has seen a drop in coronavirus case numbers - according to Reuters data, the country reported 162 infections per 100k people in the last seven days, which is lower than the UK's current rates of 348 infections per 100k people. The country is also rolling out vaccines across its population.

The Turkish embassy in London said in a statement that "the scientific data on Covid-19 support our expectation that Turkey will be removed from the red list at the upcoming review".
