Summer Games Done Quick 2020, a speedrunning marathon of video games which raises money for charity, managed to earn $2.3 million (£1.7 million) this year for Doctors Without Borders.

@GamesDoneQuick is an extremely popular event for many. You can tune in to watch games being completed as quickly as possible, all with the purpose of raising donations for charity.

The news of how much was raised was announced on Twitter by the official account, along with details of when the next GDQ events will be held.

We can look forward to the next GDQ event, Fleet Fatales, taking place this November 15 - 21 and next will be the Awesome Games Done Quick which will begin in January 2021.

This most recent event, Summer Games Done Quick, took place from Sunday, August 16 to August 23 and it garnered more than 33,000 donations from viewers according to the official donation tracker.

In total, 148 games were played and completed, which included titles such as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Bloodborne, Silent Hill Homecoming and, among many more, Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild.

Speedruns are usually done by utilising exploits and glitches in games, which allow you to either clip through walls, fly through the air or completely skip entire sections to get to the end of the game as quickly as possible.

A great example of this can be found in Zelda: Breath of The Wild by travelling long distances by using something called 'Skew'.

You can watch the BoTW run below from the most recent run, which saw the game completed in just over an hour.

This year's event also saw the first-ever VR speedrun when they played through Half-:Life: Alyx.

Due to the current situation, GDQ was held online only as opposed to being an in-person event, but despite this, it seems it was still a huge success.
