An open-air kabuki performance of "Masakado" is staged to celebrate the start of the Yamaage Matsuri festival in Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi Prefecture, on Thursday night. The festival originated more than 450 years ago as a dedication to the gods at Yakumo Shrine in the city. The performance features large stage props, called yama, made with washi Japanese traditional paper. The festival was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016. Performances will be held in the city through July 29.
