Summer 'far from lost' for sun holidays, says Taoiseach Leo Varadkar

Summer holidays could be back on.

Leo Varadkar has given hope that we may hit the skies before the summer is out yet, as he reveals that we are making “real progress” in the battle against coronavirus.

The Taoiseach was speaking in the Dail this afternoon when he said: “It is far too soon for people to book their holidays yet, but summer is far from lost.”

And he said that international air travel will resume soon, with this only being “weeks away”.

Mr Varadkar is getting ready for another announcement tomorrow where it is expected he will confirm the Government is ready to move to phase two of the roadmap out of lockdown.

In advance of this he addressed the Dail and praised the Irish people for our efforts in the fight against Covid-19 so far.

Mr Varadkar said we are "making real and measurable process,” but he added: “However, we need to be confident that it is safe before we make the next move.

“I believe it is better to adopt a slow and steady approach instead of going too far and too fast.

“But given the numbers, I’m confident we can proceed to stage two on Monday.”

The Taoiseach then gave great hope for the public desperate to get away for a sun holiday abroad at some stage this summer.

He said: “I hope to see international air travel resume, first through air bridges, but this is some weeks away.

“It is far too soon for people to book their holidays yet, but summer is far from lost.”
