Summer 2021 set to be the best ever - with huge festivals and sports events back

Lockdown is easing, temperatures are soaring and the nights are finally getting longer.

A spokesperson for the Met Office, said: ““Over the next three months, warm conditions are almost twice as likely as normal and there is a greater than normal chance of impacts from hot weather, most likely later in the period.

“However, cold spells are still possible, especially during April.”

But, as we head in to summer, what kind of things can we expect to do to make the most of the weather?

We take a look at some of the best events going ahead...

May

Brighton Festival

Brighton

A celebration of music, theatre, art, film, literature, debate and family events taking place across a variety of venues across Brighton and Hove.

Hay Festival

Brecon Beacons

A festival of Literature and Arts, this annual festival is held in a tented village on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Past speakers have included literary greats such as Margaret Atwood, Ian McEwan and David Walliams.

Trooping the Colour

12 June

London

Also known as the Queen’s Birthday Parade, this impressive display features a military parade as well as horses and musicians. The Queen always attends.

Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot may be forced to have a smaller crowd this year (John Hoy)

15- 19 June

Berkshire

The horse racing extravaganza will still be going ahead this year – albeit with a much smaller crowd of between 4000 and 10000 people each day.

Wiltshire

Watch the sun rise over the iconic monument to celebrate the summer time. It’s a magical time for neo-druids, tourists and families alike.

Wimbledon

Swansea

Wales’ biggest free event will be taking place at Swansea Bay, where visitors can delight in breathtaking air displays, military aircraft and vintage planes from the past.

RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival

5 – 11 July

Surrey

The world’s largest flower show is sure to fill visitors with inspiration for their summer gardens thanks to its fragrant floral displays.

British Grand Prix

16 – 18 July

Silverstone

Racing fans are able to purchase tickets to watch the exhilarating circuit at Silverstone this July. It’s a weekend festival with food, world-class live music and activities for everyone.

BBC Proms

Blenheim Palace Food Festival

20 – 22 August

Oxfordshire

Not only does this festival promise delicious culinary delights, but visitors can look forward to strolling jazz musicians and children’s storytellers – all within the beautiful palace grounds.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Stormzy, Queens of the Stone Age and Post Malone are all set to take to the stage for audiences at reading and leeds. Organiser, Melvin Benn, said: “The acts are desperate to play, the kids are desperate to come.”

Blackpool Illuminations

Switch on night for the eye-popping illuminations happens this year in September. Visitors will be treated to a stunning display along the promenade. The show is to be extended by two months to provide an invaluable boost to the resort’s tourism season after COVID-19.

Great North Run

The Great North Run is the biggest half marathon in the UK, with a course length of 13.1 miles. While all runners are hoping the race will be able to go ahead, if it is cancelled then runners will be entitled to a refund.

21-26 September

Describing itself as the “greatest flower show on earth”, for the first time in 108 years, the Chelsea Flower Show will be held in autumn for flower fans to see the stunning horticultural displays.
