Sumlin family pursuing charges against person who sent threatening, racist letter

A few days after sharing a threatening and racist letter, the wife of Texas A&M football coach Kevin Sumlin said the family will be pressing charges against the person who sent the note to the family's home.

Charlene Sumlin said authorities are looking at the envelope that arrived at their house and she didn't hesitate in seeking prosecution.

"I literally cannot wait to look at this person eye to eye," Sumlin said. "There is a real unique kind of cowardice in someone to anonymously criticize, ridicule or threaten another person."

After Saturday's win against Nicholls State, Kevin Sumlin said a line was crossed when the letter that featured a racial slur and open-ended threat was mailed to the home. He said the Brazos County Sherriff's Office is looking into the situation.

The sender's name was left off the envelope. Houston Country Club was listed as the return address.

Charlene Sumlin said she posted the note on Twitter last Thursday so authorities might help figure out the best path toward prosecution. Within two hours, Sumlin said, people from across Texas reached out in regards to the matter. She also said she received hundreds of messages in support of the family in the wake of the incident.

The note was sent after A&M lost to UCLA 45-44 in the opener, further raising question marks about Kevin Sumlin's coaching tenure in College Station.

"Our lives are not defined and our happiness is not determined by this game," Charlene Sumlin said. "We are stronger than that."
