Sumatrans look on as Mount Sinabung erupts again, sending huge plume of ash into the sky

One of Indonesia's best known volcanos has erupted violently, sending a giant ash cloud 5 kilometres into the air, turning the sky dark.

Mount Sinabung in northern Sumatra has erupted twice in the past three days, after a year of inactivity.

Dramatic footage caught by local residents on Tuesday morning showed a giant cloud of thick ash rising from the 2,460-metre peak, and creating a thunderous noise.

Residents have been told to stay at least 3km away, and wear masks. There are no reports of casualties.

Witnesses say it was a bigger eruption than the one on Saturday.

Mount Sinabung had been inactive for centuries until it erupted suddenly in 2010.
