Sultan of Brunei's daughter marries first cousin in lavish week-long wedding

The Sultan of Brunei's daughter has married her first cousin in lavish week-long wedding.

Princess Azemah got hitched in a massive ceremony at her dad's palace.

She and her new husband Prince Bahar ibni Jefri Bolkiah, began a week of celebrations to mark the wedding in the independent sultanate on Borneo, an island in South East Asia, in the second week on the New Year.

Her new husband Prince Bahar is the son of the Sultan’s brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah.

A lavish series of celebrations started in the palace's Banquet Hall at Istana Nurul Iman, the official residence of the Sultan and included seven ceremonies.

A traditional gift exchange was among the key events which included a presentation of the royal insignia followed by a three-day wedding ceremony and reception which included dinner.

Prince Mateen, the bride's younger brother, showed a glimpse of the wedding on his Instagram feed.

It showed images from the Powdering Ceremony and the final wedding rite on January 15.

He wrote captioned the images: “So happy for my dearest big sister and BJB,”

After the death of Queen Elizabeth II last September, the Sultan of Brunei became world’s longest-serving living monarch.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah is also 'supreme leader of the Islamic faith' but also holds the titles of prime minister, finance minister, foreign affairs and trade minister, superintendent of police, defense minister and commander of the armed forces.

The Sultan has an estimated wealth of £22.5 billion ($27.7 billion) which makes him among the world’s richest rulers.

In October 2020, The Mirror reported how Hollywood film producer Prince Azim of Brunei had died at the age of 38.

The party loving royal, who was fourth in line to throne, died on Saturday morning in the capital Bandar Seri Begawan.

Although a cause of death was not released by the royal family, Azim had suffered from liver cancer.

The royal was well known for throwing lavish parties for Hollywood A-Listers.

He had been photographed rubbing shoulders with Michael Jackson, Pamela Anderson and Mariah Carey.

On one notable occasion he threw a party at which guests received goody bags worth £20,000 each, The Times reported.

They contained original oil paintings, a dental make-over and a voucher for a Kenyan safari.

Azim was the son of Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah, who is said to be worth £15billion and has 600 Rolls-Royces.

His own fortune was estimated to be a relatively modest £3.84billion, some of which he ploughed into his own London based film company.
