Sukhbir Singh Badal’s first reaction after Nanded gurdwara attack: ‘I have never been scared’

Shiromani Akali Dal chief and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday gave his first reaction after being attacked at a gurdwara in Maharashtra’s Nanded, saying the incident was aimed at disturbing peace in Punjab and asserting that he would not be intimidated.

“Their mission is to take control of the situation in Punjab and disturb the peace, which, as President of Akali Dal, I will never allow,” Badal said.

He said the attacks had taken place at places he considered among the holiest.

“Both times they attacked me in the holiest places,” Badal said, adding, “I have never been scared, nor am I afraid now.”

Badal said the Shiromani Akali Dal remained committed to preserving Punjab’s brotherhood and pride.

“Shiromani Akali Dal is committed to the brotherhood and pride of Punjab. Shiromani Akali Dal can make any sacrifice, but Punjab's progress and communal and religious harmony are our top priority,” he said.

What happened in Nanded?

Badal was attacked with a kirpan at Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji Mugat on the outskirts of Nanded on Thursday afternoon while he was visiting the shrine. According to Maharashtra Police, the attack took place at around 1:45 pm and the alleged attacker, identified as 62-year-old Jaspal Singh, was taken into custody.

Badal suffered an injury to his hand and was taken to a private hospital for treatment. Economic Times reported that he underwent surgery on Friday for a tendon injury and nerve damage and was declared stable by doctors.

The incident prompted Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to order a probe into the attack. Political and religious leaders, including the BJP and the Akal Takht, condemned the violence.

Badal's remarks on Friday come amid heightened political attention around Punjab, with the Shiromani Akali Dal preparing for the state's upcoming electoral battle. Economic Times reported that Badal had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 7, with the meeting triggering speculation over a possible renewed understanding between the SAD and BJP.
