Suits spin-off confirmed with production starting next month

A spin-off of popular legal drama Suits, where Meghan Markle found fame, has been confirmed with production expected to start as early as March.

According to reports on Friday, NBCUniversal has ordered a pilot off Suits: LA.

Variety suggests that Suits: LA will follow a character called Ted Black.

Formerly a prosecutor in New York, he aims to reinvent himself by representing Los Angeles’ most powerful.

The logline reads: "His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career.

"Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives.

"All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved."

Production is expected to begin next month in Vancouver.

The original show starred Patrick J Adams as an attorney called Michael Ross who lands a job at a prestigious New York legal firm despite never attending law school.

Recurring characters included Harvey Specter, played by Gabriel Macht, who was Mike’s boss, and paralegal-turned-lawyer Rachel Zane, played by Markle, who was Mike’s love interest.

It originally aired on USA Network between 2011 and 2019 and on Dave in the UK. But many new fans have found it via Netflix following Markle’s relationship with Prince Harry, with the show smashing streaming records since it returned to Netflix last year.

Speaking to the LA Times, show creator Aaron Korsch suggested the renewed love of Suits could be credited to Markle joining the royal family.

"[The show] has an inherent optimism to it, and I think that’s a real part of what people respond to," Mr Korsh added.
