Suit Direct to open Metrocentre store in October with brands including Ben Sherman and Ted Baker

Marc Darcy, Ben Sherman and Antique Rogue will be among the big-name brands on sale at a new men's clothing store bringing some added flair to Gateshead.

Suit Direct has announced it is to open a flagship branch at the Metrocentre in October and it is set to offer "a boutique, customer-focused shopping experience".

The company sells men's formalwear and 'smart casual-wear' including suits for occasions such as proms, weddings and race-days.

Also among the premium brands it will stock will be Ted Baker and Gibson London.

The Gateshead store, which will open in the Platinum Mall on October 3, will be the second store for the company following its recent launch in Birmingham.

The company says it marks a new era as it sets its sights on further expansion across UK high streets.

Retail director Amanda Argent said: "We are delighted to be continuing our growth in the UK.

"We cannot wait to be a part of the Intu Metrocentre, a place famous throughout the region for its fantastic brands and shopping experience.

“We want to be the go-to brand for all occasions, including weddings, the famous Newcastle races, work formal wear and prom."

The Metrocentre store will also stock accessories including shoes, ties and belts and the Suit Direct team will provide measuring services, free alterations and an in-store kiosk where customers can order stock from the company's website for free collection.

Charlotte Jackson, senior marketing manager of the brand's operator Baird Group, said the pandemic has seen retailers learn to adapt to shoppers' needs and she thinks online shopping cannot compare to a face-to-face shopping experience.

"The products we sell in our Suit Direct stores are not ones you can usually buy on a whim, without proper measurement and understanding of fit," she said.

"Being able to see products in real life is a completely different experience."
