Suicide Squad 2: New James Gunn sequel will actually be a reboot with new characters

The next Suicide Squad film will reportedly be a reboot of the franchise as opposed to a sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, who Warner Bros has confirmed will write the DC film after being fired by Disney for offensive tweets, is also now said to be directing the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, his take on the film will be a relaunch with new characters and cast members, although some are expected to return.

The reports come after Warner Bros dated a series of high-profile releases, including The Batman, which will be written and directed by War for the Planet of the Apes's Matt Reeves. This news officially marks Ben Affleck's departure from the franchise.

Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep, which will star Ewan McGregor, has also been dated. The book is a sequel to The Shining, featuring a grown-up version of Danny Torrance.

The Suicide Squad will be released 6 August 2021.
