Suicide Squad director David Ayer has said much of Jared Leto’s performance as the Joker was “ripped out of” the 2016 film.
Ayer recently criticised the movie, which super-villains come together to save the world, and called for the director’s cut to be released.
Tweeting about the film, Ayer wrote: “Jared was pretty mistreated during this. No one has seen his performance. It was ripped out of the movie.”
Ayer had previously claimed Suicide Squad got the “Edward Scissorhands” treatment, with so many scenes being axed.
He tweeted: “My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment.
“The film I made has never been seen.”
Suicide Squad received mostly negative reviews from fans and critics.
A sequel, titled The Suicide Squad, is currently in production with director James Gunn. The film is scheduled for release on 6 August, 2021, although it is unclear whether the coronavirus pandemic will affect this.
Last year, it was reported that Leto was left “alienated and upset” after not being cast in the recent Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix.
