Suicide Squad director reveals cut Joker twist viewers weren't 'permitted to see'

Filmmaker David Ayer has confirmed that he filmed and edited a twist ending to the DC supervillain film Suicide Squad.

The film was critically panned when it was released in 2016. Fans have subsequently called for a director’s cut of the film to be released (the “Ayer cut”), which would give the Joker (Jared Leto) a larger role.

On Twitter, a Suicide Squad fan tweeted a page of the script to Ayer, which showed the Suicide Squad in conflict with Joker. The page implies that Joker had teamed up with Enchantress, played by Cara Delevingne.

He asked the director: “Did you shoot all of this?? #ReleaseTheAyerCut”

Ayer responded: “Yes I did. Shot and edited. Of course you were not permitted to see it, my friend.”

Calls for the Ayer cut to be released, backed by the filmmaker himself, have gained traction after it was confirmed that director Zack Snyder would be allowed to re-edit his own DC comics flop, 2017’s Justice League.

Ayer has complained about studio interference with the film, writing on Twitter: “My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me.”

“It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment,” he sadded. “The film I made has never been seen.”

Suicide Squad also starred Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Viola Davis. A sequel called The Suicide Squad, is currently in the works, with Guardians of the Galaxy‘s James Gunn directing.
