Sugar warning as parents urged to wean their kids off sweets and fizzy drinks

Nutritionists have called for parents to take control of their children’s diet after a study revealed kids in Britain eat nearly 23kg of sugar every year.

Research on 2000 parents and children found the average child will consume 156 cans of fizzy drink, 208 bags of sweets and 260 biscuits.

And the typical six to 11-year-old wolfs down 260 packets of crisps and 208 chocolate bars a year.

Kids will also eat 260 bowls of sugary cereal, 208 glasses of fruit juice and the same number of cake slices.

Rhiannon Lambert, from dairy food firm Arla Explorers, which carried out the research, said: “Parents should be thinking about replacing some of the unhealthier snacks with foods high in fibre, such as fresh fruit, to reduce their overall sugar consumption.”

Psychologist Anjula Mutanda said: “Foods such as fruit and popcorn can help change taste buds.”
