It is still possible for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics to be carried out if thorough coronavirus prevention measures are taken, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference to announce the state of emergency extension on Friday at the Prime Minister's Office.
Suga said: "We are considering strict infection control measures. I believe it is possible to hold the Games safely and securely by implementing thorough countermeasures, while protecting the lives and health of the public. We will make thorough preparations."
The prime minister cited such factors as the spread of coronavirus variants as being behind the government's decision to extend the state of emergency. "We have decided that we need to maintain strong vigilance and take renewed measures," he said.
Regarding vaccinations for the elderly population, Suga expressed his intention to have one million doses administered daily, saying, "I myself will take the lead in speeding up the process."
