WASHINGTON -- Hamburgers were served for the two leaders at Friday's Japan-U.S. summit, but Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga didn't eat his because he was engrossed in conversation with U.S. President Joe Biden, Suga told reporters after the meeting.
"I ended up doing nothing with [the burger]. That's how engrossed I was," Suga said. A one-on-one lunch meeting was held at the beginning of the summit, lasting about 20 minutes. The two leaders talked mainly about private topics, including their families and life experiences, according to Suga.
The two governments limited the number of events related to the summit to prevent novel coronavirus infections, but they may have concluded that the two leaders sharing time over a quick lunch by themselves would not cause any problem.
