WASHINGTON -- Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said Saturday he has "no intention of accepting" a ministerial post in the next cabinet even if he is offered one.
Suga is currently visiting the United States, and met with reporters in Washington on Saturday.
"I want to tackle things that I myself have been working on and that I believe are necessary," the prime minister said. In the future, he is expected to aim to realize policies from the standpoint of the Liberal Democratic Party.
Regarding the schedule for lifting the coronavirus-related state of emergency still in effect in 19 prefectures, Suga said: "The [daily] number of newly infected people, which at one time exceeded 25,000, has dropped to about 3,000. I want to make a decision after analyzing the situation at the beginning of the week and hearing from experts."
