The Cabinet of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga resigned en masse Monday morning during an extraordinary Cabinet meeting.

Suga, who took office on Sept. 16, 2020, served in the post for 384 days.

"Grasping for ways to contain the coronavirus, we were able to mobilize the power of the Cabinet to get the vaccination done quickly," Suga said at the meeting.

In the prime minister's statement on the Cabinet's resignation, which was approved at the meeting, Suga emphasized his administration's achievements: "The driving force of the country's new growth got off to a strong start, following the setting of the goal for a carbon-neutral society by 2050 and the establishment of the Digital Agency. We immediately implemented the reduction in mobile phone charges, which greatly reduced the burden on households."

Regarding the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, he said, "We were able to fulfill the government's responsibility as the host country."

"Through the past year," Suga added, "we were able to show the path to a future where children, young people and the public can feel secure and hopeful."
