Suffolk wildfire ‘like something out of an apocalypse film’, says tourist

  • Connor Dowsett, 23, was evacuated from Cliff House Holiday Park in Dunwich, Suffolk , due to a wildfire , describing the experience as "like something out of an apocalypse film" and "the end of the world" as he witnessed the orange moon and brown smoke.
  • His shih-poo dog, Doug, was subsequently rescued from their lodge by a police officer after they were forced to leave the holiday park.
  • Mr Dowsett, who had only been on holiday for a day and a half, is currently staying with a couple in Westleton and expressed gratitude for the local support, stating he would "absolutely" finish his holiday if it becomes safe to return.
  • Martin Harris, 80, and Sheila Harris, 76, who have visited Dunwich Cliffs Estate holiday park for over 40 years, were also evacuated, managing only to pack their medication before leaving their static caravan .
  • Mrs Harris voiced concerns about potentially losing their caravan and not being able to afford a replacement, while Mr Harris praised the "fantastic" support from the people of Westleton, with the couple planning to return to their caravan in two weeks.
