Firefighters are tackling a blaze involving hazardous materials at Parham airfield in Suffolk.

Witness have reported seeing a “couple of explosions”.

Thirteen fire appliances are in attendance, BBC Suffolk say.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue said on Twitter: "Our crews are currently attending a fire at a premises near #Parham airfield.

"Due to the amount of smoke in the area, local residents and businesses are advised to keep doors and windows closed. Drivers are also asked to avoid the area."

One witness told the East Anglian Daily Times that the fire was raging through an older part of the former-WW2 airfield.

She said: “I have never seen a fire like it.

“By the time I happened to be passing, just after 10am, the fire was absolutely blazing through the roof of what looked like an original Second World War building.

"It looked like it had an asbestos roof and was very close to the control tower museum.

“There were two massive explosions and in one a flaming barrel flew high into the air.

“Someone from a nearby farm said there were apparently a large amount of resin stored in the building.”

Police are also attending the fire.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said “We were called shortly before 9.55am following reports of a fire at Parham Airfield.

“Officers are in attendance and are assisting the fire service

“Road closures are in place in the area."

Pictures on social media show thick black plumes of smoke coming from Parham and a huge emergency service response is in attendance.
