Sudu: Queen’s Park restaurant launched by children of Satay House founders

Family affair: Sudu

Good news for fans of cult-favourite Malaysian restaurant Satay House: the children of the husband-and-wife duo who opened that Paddington spot back in the Seventies have now launched their own place in Queen’s Park.

Sudu, which landed in the north-west London neighbourhood a few weeks ago, aims to offer a contemporary take on Malaysian cuisine, with the likes of whole grilled mackerel with turmeric, ginger and garlic, served with a tamarind dip, and the Mee George Town, a yellow wheat noodle stir-fried with prawn, beef, peanut, egg, potato and lemon wedge.

Elsewhere, the restaurant — which is styled on the “kopitiam” coffee houses found in South-East Asia — will dish up Nyonya-style laksa gravy ladled over bee hoon noodles with puffed tofu, egg, chicken and prawn, as well as char kway teow: flat rice noodles stir-fried in a hot wok with prawns, squid, egg, mustard green, chives and bean sprouts.

Some of the big-hitters of Malaysian cuisine will also make an appearance. “There’s no way we could carry on our parents’ legacy and not serve up our dad’s beef rendang, nasi goreng, nasi lemak or nasi cam cam (nasi campur),” said Fatizah and Irqam Shawal, the siblings behind Sudu. “These recipes have been in our family for nearly 50 years and we would have done a disservice to Sudu by not including them on the menu because they’re so delicious and so popular.”

The restaurant hopes to soon offer a Malaysian breakfast menu, with a speakeasy-style basement bar also in the works, serving cocktails with an Asian twist alongside Malaysian snacks.
