Sudden Met Office severe weather warnings issued for Friday - tricky conditions

Severe weather warnings for ice have been issued for parts of Wales and central England, as well as parts of Scotland and northern England, by the Met Office as temperatures fall.

It says there could be an increased risk of accidents or injuries on icy roads, pavements and cycle paths.

The alert covers from 3.30pm to 11.59pm on Friday (January 7),

The Met Office said that earlier wintry showers in the north, and rain sleet and hill snow further south, will leave surfaces cold and wet by early evening.

Its chief forecaster said: "Clear spells for a time will allow ice to form in places, particularly for evening commuters, before temperatures trend up after midnight. "

That earlier snow across Scotland caused difficult driving conditions for motorists, with Traffic Scotland reported that heavy snow overnight is affecting many routes, including the M77 and M74.

It said multiple vehicles had been stuck on the M8 eastbound off-slip at junction 16 in Glasgow due to difficult driving conditions at around 6.40am, with gritters deployed to the scene.

The incident was later cleared.

Bear North West Trunk Roads said there is snow on routes including the A82 in the Glencoe and Tyndrum area, the A9 and the A83.

In the Highlands, Grantown Grammar School and Kingussie High School were closed due to severe road conditions, while in South Lanarkshire several schools delayed opening until 10am.
