The Sudanese Ministry of Health announced 39 new coronavirus cases, of the total 1,242 tested, without recording any deaths.

The Ministry reported on Wednesday an increase in the number of coronavirus-infected persons, bringing the total to 13,905, with 836 deaths and 6,764 recoveries since the pandemic was first detected in the country.

It said that most of the cases were detected in Khartoum, with only two cases in the center and the north of the country.

Meanwhile, the leader of the National Umma Party, and former prime minister, Sadiq al-Mahdi, was flown by private jet to the UAE to complete his treatment after testing positive for the coronavirus. He was accompanied by his two sons and daughters.

Mahdi was kept under observation in a hospital in Sudan after he and 21 of his family members contracted the COVID-19 virus.

The National Umma Party said that Mahdi’s condition became “more stable” on Wednesday morning, and the medical team was overseeing his treatment. It also reported that his two sons were recovering, while other family and party members who tested positive were in stable condition.

A number of Sudanese top officials were infected by the coronavirus, including two senior associates of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok who tested positive for the virus.

Both the Prime Minister and the President of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, were tested and their results came back negative.

Acting Minister of Health Osama Ahmed Abdel Rahim announced that the health emergency committee discussed the "second wave" of coronavirus, based on the spike in the number of cases in neighboring countries, some of which were considering complete lockdown.

Authorities detected an increase in the number of COVID-19 infections “especially over the past two days”, said Abdel Rahim, adding that the response would be determined based on the spread of the virus.

He stressed that the community’s ability to deal with the pandemic would help in limiting its spread and determine whether the country ought to go on lockdown, stressing the need for maintaining social distances and wearing masks.
