Sudan protest leaders, military rulers agree on joint council

Sudan protest leaders, military rulers agree on joint council

There has been a breakthrough in Sudan after weeks of a standoff between protesters and the military over how the country should be governed in the coming months.

Protest leaders and the army have reached a deal to form a joint civilian-military council to discuss a peaceful transition to civilian rule.

The military took charge earlier this month, after removing President Omar al-Bashir.

Al Jazeera's Hiba Morgan reports from Khartoum.
