A member of the negotiating delegation of the Declaration of Freedom and Change, Babikir Faisal, underlined his alliance’s rejection of the constitutional declaration that grants members of the sovereign council immunity from any criminal accountability or charges during their tenure.
He explained that while immunity was provided for in many other countries’ constitutions, it was not an absolute immunity that lets any person gets away with punishment.
The Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the Forces for Freedom and Change agreed to form a sovereign council of five military and five civilians and an eleventh member, who is required to be a civilian and approved by the TMC.
The council is expected to be formed after the signing of the final agreement between the parties, which was made today (Wednesday).
In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Faisal noted that the Sudanese people were still under the shock of the violent measures taken by the military to break the sit-in.
This move has made them lose confidence in the military council, because it is “a treacherous behavior and a massacre-like atrocity,” according to Faisal.
“But we must look to the future of the country. We must put those events in a general framework to head towards a stage that will pave the way for putting the country on the right track,” he emphasized.
The opposition official added: “It is in the interest of both civilians and military to cooperate for the success of the transitional period. Disputes will only hamper the success of this period. Everyone will lose. We must benefit from the experiences of others… and spare the country confrontations and clashes.”
Asked about the investigations into the violence that broke out during the TMC’s attempt to break the sit-ins, Faisal said: “We have agreed on the formation of an independent and transparent commission of inquiry that has nothing to do with the committee formed by the Military Council. It will issue its report on this basis.”
