Succession's Brian Cox speaks in support of pal Alec Baldwin following tragic incident on Rust set

Succession star Brian Cox spoke in support of his pal Alec Baldwin amid the aftermath of the tragic shooting on the set of 'Rust'.

Cox shared that he felt 'terrible' for both Baldwin and cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in the wake of the tragedy.

Hutchins died after being shot by a prop gun, which had been declared 'cold', after it was fired by Alec.

Cox told BBC presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty: “Alec, who is a friend, I just can’t imagine what it’s done to him.

“He’s 68, in the last ten years he’s got five kids, which is a whole new life for him, really, late in life.

“I just feel terrible for him, and, of course, I feel awful for that poor girl.”

The Succession star also provided some more insight into the incident after spending time on a number of Hollywood sets throughout his career.

He revealed he had been told the full extent of what happened but was unable to share it on-air.

“There was something that went on with that gun,” he claimed.

“I don’t know what it was, I’ve been told what it was but I can’t tell you what it was here. I’ll tell you after what it was.”

Revealing more of his insight, Cox recalled the production of Rust had already encountered its fair share of issues before the shooting.

He said: “Some of the staff went off, they left and they brought in a lot of non-union people.

“Not on that side, not on the armoury side.”

Cox clarified that Rust was a low-budget production, but film sets nevertheless maintain strict health and safety precautions.

“They are so particular about weapons. The armourers are really excellent.

“I’ve never had any problems and I’ve fired a lot of guns in my time, and I’ve never had a problem. But this was just unbelievable. Unbelievable.”

Investigators have said a “lead projectile” was also found in director Souza’s shoulder after the incident.

They also claimed there was a level of complacency surrounding the safety measures on the set of Rust.

Regarding potential charges, District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said: “All options are on the table. No one has been ruled out at this point.”

New Mexico police have so far recovered 600 pieces of evidence, including 500 rounds of ammunition, according to Sante Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza.

Baldwin is cooperating with investigators after expressing his shock over the “tragic accident”.

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am on BBC One.
