Success for Nottinghamshire Live journalists at Society of Editors’ Regional Press Awards

Nottinghamshire Live and the Nottingham Post stormed to two awards at the Regional Press Awards.

The prestigious awards by the Society of Editors’ celebrate the best of British regional and local journalism.

From a field of nearly 700 entries, the winners were announced on Friday June 19 in a special video event which replaced the planned gala awards lunch due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Digital news reporter Joe Locker won the Cathryn Nicoll award for his interview with former Rushcliffe MP, Ken Clarke. You can read the article here.

He said: "I feel honoured to have been presented with this award during a ceremony which highlights the importance and very best of regional news - at a time when trusted, quality journalism is crucial.

"I want to say a huge thank you to the judges for their comments, and to the wonderful team at the Nottingham Post/Nottinghamshire Live for their support, friendship and confidence in me since the very beginning."

Our second award was for Dan Russell who scooped Social Media Journalist of the year.

He said: "Social media is an incredible story telling platform when used to communicate and inform readers. I am delighted to have won this prestigious award but without our readers there would be no award.

"This, combined with all of my colleagues at Nottinghamshire Live, helped make it all possible. Thank you."

Nottinghamshire Live's Notts County writer, Leigh Curtis, was nominated for Sports Journalist of the Year – Daily Paper, and the whole newsroom was nominated for social media team of the year.

Ian Murray, executive director of the Society of Editors said: “Even though the awards have been affected by the Coronavirus emergency and we were unable to stage the gala lunch we were determined all the fantastic work carried out by the regional and local press did not go unrecognised.

“Anyone looking at the breadth and scale of the entries for this year’s awards will recognise the tremendous and vital role the sector plays in our nation."
