Subway rice cooker suspect trying to work out plea deal with prosecutors: lawyer

NEW YORK _ A West Virginia man who sparked a bomb scare by allegedly leaving rice cookers in a Lower Manhattan subway station is trying to strike a plea deal with prosecutors.

Larry Griffin, 26, who was arrested for the panic-inducing Aug. 16 stunt after he was found passed out in the Bronx from an apparent overdose, didn't appear at a court hearing in Manhattan criminal court Friday.

The case was adjourned to Sept. 6.

His lawyer, Michael Croce, said afterward he's "trying to resolve" the case with prosecutors but declined to discuss specifics.

"It's just an open conversation," Croce said.

According to police, Griffin used a shopping cart to tote a pair of Winco rice cookers _ which operate like pressure cookers and can be turned into bombs _ into the Fulton Street subway station. His rice cookers, however, weren't altered to become explosives.

He's being held without bail.
