One man is dead and a young child has been taken to hospital after a crash between a bus and car.

Emergency services were called to Sanctuary Drive at Rouse Hill, in Sydney's northwest, about 7pm on Tuesday after reports of the collision.

Paramedics treated one passenger in the car, a man believed to be in his 60s, but he was declared dead at the scene.

The 40-year-old male car driver was initially trapped in the vehicle before he was freed and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Three other passengers, a 39-year-old woman, a woman in her 60s and a four-year-old child, were taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The 61-year-old male bus driver was uninjured but was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Police have established a crime scene and an investigation is under way into the cause of the crash.
