Subterranean spectacle

Icy stalagmites shine with reflected light inside the former Shojingawa Mine in Nanae, Hokkaido. More than 10,000 stalagmites -- some having reached heights of over 2 meters -- are growing underground there. Experts say stable winter temperatures inside the pit make falling drops of water form the ice towers, rather than icicles hanging on the ceiling.
