A substitute teacher who was jailed for having sex with a teenage student is a recluse in prison, Dublin Live has learned.
The woman, who is now 25 and cannot be named for legal reasons, has not been interacting with other inmates at Dublin’s Dochas Centre since being locked up.
A court heard last month how the teacher, who was 23 at the time, waited until the boy’s 16th birthday before engaging in sexual activity because she believed that was the age of consent.
She pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two counts of defilement early last year at Gormanston Beach, Co Meath, and at the Carlton Hotel, Tyrrelstown, Mulhuddart, Dublin.
She received a three-year jail sentence with two years suspended.
A source told Dublin Live: “The woman in question appeared to be in shock at getting such a sentence.
“She was very upset by it all and since entering the Dochas hasn’t been interacting with anybody.
"She has been going about her business and not talking or engaging with any other
prisoner. She does her own thing and sticks to herself.
“It’s the norm for any prisoner who was a teacher before being locked up to teach other inmates.
“There have been numerous times that has been the case.
“It could be her simply teaching someone to learn to read or write or improve on a certain topic.
“It’s unlikely she will partake in courses despite being allowed to as she’s likely to get out after eight months when remission is taken into account and won’t really have the time.”
During a sentence hearing it emerged the boy was in fifth year when the woman started working there as a substitute teacher.
They began to message each other on Snapchat after he waved at her in a nightclub and she came over and hugged him.
In a victim impact statement the boy said he had fallen into a deep depression after the sexual encounters.
