Substantial meal rule set to be scrapped for when pubs reopen

The Government's much-criticised substantial meal rule is set to be scrapped when pubs reopen, it has been reported.

Boris Johnson has ordered the rules and requirements to be simplified when lockdown eases, according to The Times.

The PM has also said that he doesn't want to see a return to regional tiers.

The substantial meal rule came into force when the tier system was first introduced last autumn and meant that in certain areas, alcohol could be only be served with a substantial meal.

It forced the closures of thousands of wet-led pubs and bars and left others scrambling to serve up food.

There was plenty of debate and confusion around what the definition of 'substantial' was, with Michael Gove saying that a Scotch egg 'would suffice'.

Manchester bar Common hit headlines nationwide after its giant pizza slices were deemed by police to be insubstantial.

The Northern Quarter institution complained that their 11-inch slices were 'f*****g massive' and the decision was overturned a day later.

Others threw together £1.50 chip butties and £1 bowls of chilli to try and stay open for business.

CAMRA chief executive Tom Stainer said that the substantial meal rule was 'devastating' for pubs, which had been ' made a scapegoat for the pandemic '.

The PM will lay out his roadmap out of lockdown on February 22.
