Subs Bench speaks to Marcus Trescothick about his new coaching role at Somerset

This week’s Subs Bench sees Richard Latham meet Somerset legend Marcus Trescothick.

Trescothick called an end to his prestigious playing career this year at the ripe age of 43, after making his first-class debut in 1993.

Somerset won their first trophy since 2005 with the Royal London One Day cup success at Lords this year, as well as finishing second in the County Championship thanks to a final day wash-out at title-winners Essex, but Tresco spent most of the year watching from the pavilion before transitioning into a coaching role for next season.

In the chat, the former England international reflects on playing first-class cricket as a 17- year-old, lifting silverware at Lords, world-class over-seas players and finishing as runners- up one too many times.

He said: “I remember being a nervous wreck, I couldn’t deal with the occasion and everything that was going on, the emotion and anxiety of it was massive.

“It was a big final, it was against Gloucester, I was young, and it was Lords. All of the above.”

Trescothick stayed at the County Ground his whole 27-season-career, making himself a legend with a stand now dedicated to his name.

Somerset will retain his services, having signed a two-year deal as assistant coach.

The new coach also explains the challenge of keeping that Somerset team together, after break-out seasons for a lot of the squad.

He said: “How long can you keep that team together for, because there are some good young players in it.

“At the end of the day we want to win trophies, of course we do, but the main job is to produce players that play for England.”
