Subs Bench meets former Gloucestershire and Somerset cricketer and ex-England chairman of selectors David Graveney

The Ashes is in full swing and alive and well after Ben Stokes' incredible match-winning knock to beat Australia at Headingley on Sunday.

Such a tense finish to the game, with England winning by one wicket, brought to mind the 2005 Ashes, hailed as one of the greatest Test series of all time.

One man who held a prominent position in English cricket at that time was David Graveney, who was chairman of selectors for the Test team between 1997 and 2008.

Subs Bench recently caught up with the Bristol-born 66-year-old to discuss his cricket career in detail.

The all-rounder, who could both bat and bowl left-arm spin, began his career at Gloucestershire and spent 18 years at his home county, captaining them between 1982 and 1988.

He went on to have a short stint at near rivals Somerset before ending his career at Durham.

Graveney was also awarded an OBE for his services to cricket in 2005.

His father Ken was also a Gloucestershire legend who spent 17 years at the club and once famously took all 10 wickets in an innings.
