Subs Bench meets Bristol broadcasting legend Roger Malone - and reveals just who he supported

Subs Bench caught up with someone who will be a familiar face to many of a certain age in Bristol.

Roger Malone was the face of sport on HTV, covering both Bristol City and Bristol Rovers, along with cricket and rugby.

Now 86, Malone has plenty of stories to tell about his time covering sport in the city.

He reveals to Subs Bench how he arrived at Bristol aged 16 and quickly realised he was not good enough to follow his dream of being the next Denis Compton and playing both football and cricket at a professional level.

Instead, he became a sports writer but actually made a late start in the profession, moving to London and working for the Daily Express.

His career path took another interesting turn when he was offered a screen test as a newscaster at ITN.

He was popular with fans across the city as he brought supporters the Saturday evening results.

Malone also tells Subs Bench about his time on a celebrity football team and his time in journalism.
