Subs Bench: Former Bristol Rovers midfielder David 'Boris' Mehew revisits 1990 cup run

Former midfielder David 'Boris' Mehew is the next guest of the Subs Bench team - as Nigel Turner and Richard Latham discuss a distinguished nine years with the Gas, and in particular heading to the 'home of football'.

The ex-England U16s player talks fondly through his time playing at Eastville, snapped up by Rovers after being released from Leeds United, and also being part of a team featuring Ian Holloway, Gary Penrice, Geoff Twentyman and others that almost won the 1989-90 Associate Members' Cup.

Great names and good times in the history of Bristol Rovers.

Mehew explains that nickname of 'Boris' as being because of Boris Becker, while he also gave insight on playing under Bobby Gould and with John Scales, revealing that he was also handy at tennis before discussing that game against the side from Nottinghamshire.

"It was the era of good athletes," explained Mehew of former teammate Scales who went on to play for Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

"And he was a great athlete."

Meanwhile, of the game in question and a narrow victory in March 1990: "Later in the game I did a late tackle on Dean Yates and he was  one of their talisman players and out for three months. And Neil Warnock came into the lounge afterwards and had a right go at me. Gerry pulled him up on it - he wasn't well known then," said Mehew, who got the only goal in the semi-final home leg for Rovers.

Though there was doubt that Mehew would make the final (unfortunately lost 2-1 to Tranmere Rovers), as he regales here.
