WASHINGTON _ House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte issued a subpoena Thursday ordering the Department of Justice to hand over memos drafted by former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe that detail his meetings with top DOJ officials.
In one of those meetings, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein allegedly suggested secretly recording President Donald Trump and invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.
The two-page subpoena calls for the DOJ to deliver "all documents and communications" written by McCabe to "memorialize discussions, meetings or correspondence he had with senior government officials," including Trump.
There were numerous media reports earlier this week suggesting Rosenstein offered his resignation and expected Trump to fire him but no final calls were made then. Trump, who was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, said he did not want to make a decision until he gathered more information. He will sit down with Rosenstein next week to assess his future at the department after pushing back a meeting scheduled for Thursday.
Democrats dismissed the subpoena as the latest in the House GOP's efforts to undermine special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's investigation into possible ties between officials in Trump's 2016 campaign and Russia.
"House Republicans are playing a very dangerous game by attempting to force the Department of Justice to reveal materials relating to an ongoing criminal investigation in order to protect President Trump," Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said in a statement Thursday.
